The Juice Box
Sophomore fall design assignment
with Professor Simrun Sethi
9/2021–10/2021
The Prompt
to design a container inspired by the form of a fruit or vegetable.
Jackfruit to Juice Box
This Juice Box allows the user to control the concentrations of their drinks

A simple mechanism allows the user to store two components of the drink separately within the same bottle and control the composition of the drink as they consume it
The Process
1
Mindmapping to get ideas from zero to one
2
Ideating, Sharing and Iterating
Mapping out my ideas or thoughts helps get my foot in door. In this case, I started off with exploring the different fruits I could play around with and identifying opportunities for inspiration.
I decided to settle on the Jackfruit, a fruit that reminded me of home.
The relationship between the various parts of the fruit (seed, cover, pulp) intrigued me. I used it as inspiration to push deeper into the design process.
Jackfruits are very popular back home. Not only because they taste delicious, but also because eating them is a task in itself! The seed is attached to the roof of the fruit so tight and removing it is always a hassle. So for the sake of this project, I looked at the most "annoying" feature of the fruit as inspiration to design my container.

The inner container fits inside the larger bottle like the seed of the jackfruit, with the tops attached.
The chosen shape fits comfortably in the palm of the user and also provides grip when holding the bottle in different positions.

Protoyping
This was my first time using a 3D printer.
While I was comfortable prototyping with materials, CAD is a new skill I learnt for this project.

I learnt to model my product on Fusion 360 and to build it such that it can be printed in a 3D printer.

I was able to add features such as a screw and a threaded interior, which would have been impossible if I stuck to creating only a foam model.
